Hallelujah! Nestle Toll House Has Created Cookie Dough That’s Safe To Eat

Guilt-free, illness-free cookie dough straight outta the tub? Best. News. EVER.

Cookie dough is one of the most amazing delicacies in the world. Who doesn’t love sneak in a spoonful of that sweet and gooey goodness while baking cookies? The only problem is, eating raw cookie dough can be seriously dangerous, as it contains both raw egg (hello, salmonella) and raw flour, which can breed the dreaded E. coli. Most of us put our health in jeopardy anyway, because honestly…who can resist cookie dough in all of its glory?

But Nestle Toll House may have seriously turned the world around and saved us all from being hospitalized and hooked up to an IV drip. They claim to have an invented a totally “edible cookie dough,” completely safe to eat. Can we say, hallelujah?

This totally genius new product comes in two flavors — Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Monster and good ol’ Chocolate Chip — and is designed to eat straight out of the tub. No baking required. Each 15-ounce container retails for around $5.50 and is currently available at Publix. Later in the summer you will be able to find it at Walmart in the Southeast and local grocery stores.

It’s no surprise that we aren’t the only humans totally psyched about this edible cookie dough. Everyone on Twitter is going wild.

This news couldn’t come at a better time. Apparently a ton of people have been getting sick from eating raw cookie dough, and the CDC recently issued a warning about it.

“When you prepare homemade cookie dough, cake mixes, or even bread, you may be tempted to taste a bite before it is fully cooked,” they cautioned in a statement issued in September. “But steer clear of this temptation—eating or tasting unbaked products that are intended to be cooked, such as dough or batter, can make you sick.”

The reiterated the yucky reality that raw eggs, which are a key ingredient in most doughs and batters, can contain salmonella, which can cause diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. In those with weakened immune systems, the elderly, and infants it can be much more serious.

They also pointed out that raw flour can be just as bad. “In 2016, an outbreak of E. coli infections linked to raw flour made 63 people sick,” they warned. “Flour products have long shelf lives and could be in people’s homes for a long time. If you have any recalled flour products in your home, throw them away.”

But we don’t have to worry about any of this, do we? Now we can just take a jaunt to the grocery store and pick up a tub of cookie dough that won’t make us sick — well, at least not in that icky food poisoning way. If you eat the whole tub in one sitting, we won’t tell!
